Crash Data Retrieval Technician Training Course
|
Providing Quality Accident Reconstruction and Investigation

(8 Hour Class / 1 Day)
Course Description: This course presents students with the opportunity to be trained in the use
of Bosch’s Crash Data Retrieval Tool. Technician Level 1 students are presented with a
background of what Crash Data Retrieval is and how the Crash Data Retrieval Tool evolved.
Students will learn how to recognize the vehicles covered by Bosch’s system, as well as solve
connectivity issues to ensure that crash data can be downloaded correctly.
Technician Level 1 students will learn the core terms and system components associated with the
download process and how to avoid evidence spoliation issues through utilization of the preferred
methods for downloading crash data and preserving it. Technician Level 1 students will also be
taught special handling and legal considerations surrounding crash data retrieval.
Requirements: Enrollment in the Technician Level 1 training class does not require the
purchase a Bosch Crash Data Retrieval Tool.
In order to receive their certification as a Level 1 Crash Data Retrieval Technician, students must
pass a written final exam. The exam is based on the material presented throughout the in-class
training, examples and reference materials and is administered at the end of the class.
Prerequisites: none
This course was developed by the Collision Safety Institute and is part of the only standardized
Technician training approved by the Bosch committee, made up of Bosch and Original Equipment
Manufacturer (OEM) representatives. This standardization is important to crash data retrieval so all
Technician Level 1 students learn the proper methods of downloading and preserving crash data.

Crash Data Services, LLC currently teaches
the Bosch approved Technician Level 1 and
Technician Level 2 courses.
Those students who successfully complete
our crash data retrieval training will be
certified to download data from those
vehicles supported by Bosch’s Crash Data
Retrieval Tool, the only publicly available
diagnostic system capable of downloading
crash data from passenger car and light
truck Event Data Recorders (vehicle black
boxes).
For a full list of vehicles covered by Bosch’s
system, please click here.
Crash data retrieval (CDR) relies upon an
instrument installed in most passenger cars,
SUVs, and trucks called an event data
recorder (EDR).
An EDR is generally part of a vehicle's
airbag control module or powertrain control
module, and can be configured to store
recorded information such as speed, brake
use, or restraint system performance when a
vehicle is involved in a crash event.
The above photograph shows a powertrain
control module from a 2006 Ford Expedition.
To view the data downloaded from the
module, please click here.
Students who enroll in the Technician Level
2 training course will have an opportunity to
download numerous EDRs.
Crash data retrieval is an important part of
any investigation involving a motor vehicle,
providing objective results.
The technician level training offered by the
experts at Crash Data Services, LLC,
teaches students how to utilize Bosch's
Crash Data Retrieval Tool for the download
of data stored in a vehicle's event data
recorder (vehicle black box).

(4 – 8 Hours / ½ - 1 Day)
Course Description: This course presents students with the opportunity to build hands-on
experience in downloading the crash data stored in a vehicle’s event data recorder (vehicle black
box). Technician Level 2 students will perform supervised downloads of vehicle crash data via
several approved means, including the Data Link Connector (DLC) as well as direct to module
downloads. Students will have an opportunity to see and perform downloads from all the major
manufacturers covered by Bosch’s Crash Data Retrieval Tool, including General Motors Family
vehicles, Ford Family vehicles, and Daimler Chrysler vehicles.
Student will also be trained to accomplish a download under complex situations, while still following
Bosch’s preferred method of retrieval. Students will learn the basic terminology and function of
vehicle power systems, as well as how to circumvent electrical system failures through a simplified
back-powering method.
Requirements: Enrollment in the Technician Level 2 training course does not require that
students purchase a Bosch Crash Data Retrieval Tool. All airbag control modules and vehicles
used during the course are provided by Crash Data Services, LLC.
In order to receive certification as a Level 2 Crash Data Retrieval Technician, students must pass a
physical proficiency exam. The exam requires at least one successful download via the DLC, one
download using an adapter, one direct to airbag module download, and one back-powering
download through the DLC. The exam is based on the material presented throughout the in-class
presentation, examples and reference materials and is administered at the end of the class.
Prerequisites: To enroll in this training, students must first successfully complete the Technician
Level 1 course training.
This course was developed by the Collision Safety Institute and is part of the only standardized
Technician training approved by the Bosch committee, made up of Bosch and Original Equipment
Manufacturer (OEM) representatives. This standardization is important to crash data retrieval so
that all Technician Level 2 students learn the proper methods of downloading and preserving crash
data.
